Joining a HealthShare can look simple at first, but unexpected costs can lead to surprises. Being aware of costs like application and renewal fees can help prevent sticker shock when signing up for a health sharing program. The most important thing to know is that in some cases, there are additional costs besides monthly membership dues.
Application fees
Some HealthShares charge a one-time application or enrollment fee for new members. One-time application and enrollment fees range from $125 (Altrua) to $200 (Samaritan). Being prepared to pay these type of fees is a prudent approach. Keep in mind that an enrollment or application fee should not discourage a prospective member from choosing a HealthShare that otherwise would be an excellent fit overall. It may be worth paying a fee to join a company that meets a variety of healthcare needs.
It is important to note that application fees and enrollment fees are not the same. Application fees are paid only to apply for membership, and acceptance into the HealthShare is not guaranteed. If that happens, an applicant may not get that money back. Fortunately, application fees are less common than enrollment fees. If considering a company that charges an application fee, it’s wise to read the member guidelines before applying. All HealthShares publicly list their membership standards, so a prospective member can get a good idea of whether they fit the criteria.
Renewal fees
Some HealthShares also charge an annual fee to renew memberships, although this is less common. Altrua HealthShare, Liberty HealthShare, United Refuah HealthShare, and OneShare Health are known to charge renewal fees. Altrua requires $100 annually, Liberty $75, United Refuah $75, and OneShare $45. While these numbers may not be accurate year after year, it’s important to be aware that these fees can be incurred. As always, it’s best to inquire before joining any HealthShare.
Total costs
When joining a HealthShare, pay attention to total costs. In addition to monthly dues and pre-share amounts, a member may be required to pay additional application fees, one-time enrollment fees, annual renewal fees, or, in rare cases, all of them. Before committing to a HealthShare, a prospective member should ask a representative about these costs to avoid surprises.
